The Composition and Uses of Brass Wire Mesh

A brass material is a combination of copper and zinc. Same as copper, a brass wire is malleable and soft that can be attacked by ammonia and other salts. As a mesh, brass is mostly available as 270 yellow brass that is composed of about 65% copper, and 35% zinc. Other variation of brass woven wire mesh is called 260 high brass that consists 70% copper and 30% zinc. This type of brass wire is popularly used in custom manufactured mesh items. What makes it resistant to abrasion and possess higher tensile strengths is the composition of zinc. It turns the material harder compared to a copper wire mesh.

As such, brass wire mesh is widely used in filtration and separation projects, as well as in the fabrication of discs where electrical conductivity is not that critical. Typically, industrial grade brass mesh has a golden yellow colour, making it appealing to use in decorative and artistic applications. Same as copper woven wire mesh, a brass wire woven into mesh has almost endless common residential and industrial uses. These include high end infill panels, room dividers, decorative lamp shades and signage, unique artistic designs, marine use, RF amplification, chemical processing & diffusion and many more. In terms of mesh count, brass wire mesh comes in the following mesh count:

  • Coarse meshes with 1” x 1”, 2” x 2”, and 4” x 4”, all in the standard or market grade.

  • Medium brass meshes ranging from 12” x 12” to 40” x 40” mesh, available in the standard or market grades, but can also be custom manufactured depending on customer’s requirements.

  • Fine brass meshes are available from 50” x 50” to 100” x 100” mesh, and can also be customized according to specific requirements.
