Important Terms to Know to Build Kitchen Cabinets

Before selecting a kitchen cabinet style and design, learn about the different terms builders use to describe kitchen cabinets. You can describe your kitchen cabinet ideas with your builder by learning these terminologies. Keep this list handy when you want to build your kitchen.

Base Cabinet

This cabinet sits on the floor and supports the countertops. They are typically deep and have varying widths. They do not hang on walls and are typically made from strong material that lets them support the entire system.

Cabinet Carcass

This is the complete cabinet box. It is the framework of the cabinet itself and where the panels are attached, hinges are screwed in, and other features are rooted. They typically have pre-drilled holes and slots where the components will get attached.

Concealed Hinge

Concealed hinges are attached from the inside of cabinets. As their name indicates, they aren't visible with the cabinet is closed. You can only work on them by opening the cabinet doors.

Drawer Face

This is the piece attached to the face of the drawer box. Cabinet makers also call them the drawer front and where the drawer handle is attached.

Drawer Box

This is the drawer box that excludes the front face. Often, the front face is part of the drawer box.

Exposed Hinge

The opposite of concealed hinges, exposed hinges are visible outside the cabinet when the door is closed. Most cabinet makers use these hinges to avoid obstructions or uneven surfaces in the cabinet's interior.
