The Very Simple Yet Functional Spring Hangers



Also known as supports, spring hangers are needed to satisfy the design requirements of piping in power and process plants. They are simple assemblies but still, engineers have to know why they are required in certain applications, how they work, and how to effectively deal with them in case of problems. This means a deeper understanding of the spring hanger and its purpose is very important.



Most often, spring hangers are usually considered as a special type of pipe support with spring in the assembly. The unique characteristic that makes them different from other types of support is the spring rate lower stiffness. Equipped with this property, they are capable of accommodating the displacement of piping while still providing some amount of reaction force to support the pipes.



Moreover, as spring hangers have to be designed to maintain the required piping load, computational piping stress analysis is imperative to get the necessary data such as load and travel capacity. Not to mention that they can also provide much more stable supporting forces to piping even if the springs are compressed or extended according to the pipe displacement. They are commonly used in applications such as in lines covering low or high-temperature pressure vessels, rotating equipment, fired heaters, storage tanks, and heat exchangers.



They are also useful in applications that involve in-line shell and tube heat exchangers or reboilers that are attached to columns. The neglect to use spring hangers in cases that require them can lead to a lot of problems. These include pipe support failure because of insufficient load distribution, body failure caused by excessive piping load, excessive vibration, leakage at the connections because of too much thermal expansion, and component failure because of increased pipe bending stress at areas with higher stress intensity.
