Emergency lights have always been in red and blue. By simply glancing at them you can tell what type of emergency vehicle is approaching. But police car lights are often most visible and easily identifiable because of their popularity. They immediately alert other vehicle drivers on the road so that they can suddenly maneuver out of the way when officers are responding.
There are many types of emergency lights used across the globe and the use of police vehicle lights varies from country to country. They also vary widely from state to state and city to city, depending on the place. But over time, police cars as well as other emergency vehicles start to utilize flashing lights. Apart from red, they also began to use another colour - blue. In most areas, flashing red and blue police car lights are the standard emergency lights while other jurisdictions are still choosing to use other combinations or certain colours for some types of emergency vehicles.
Though in other places, it might be difficult to know the reasons why the varied colours are used, there are clear intentions why red and blue police lights are chosen in the country. For instance, blue lights are used to help other drivers be warned because it stands out from the rest of all other red lights used on the road. As for the red light, many believe that it is used because it is more visible during the day. Thus, using both colours as a combination of flashing police car lights helps alert drivers no matter the time of the day.
Lastly, another explanation for utilizing both red and blue lights helps alleviate issues involving colorblind drivers. Drivers who cannot see red lights often have any problems seeing blue. The opposite is also true and so using both lights in police cars is just reasonable to alert all drivers, including those who are colorblind.
