The Different Names of Siren Sounds

Sirens are a traditional instrument used in many cultures, and recent advances in technology have only improved their performance. The use of sirens is usually associated with danger, as they warn people to flee from their immediate area. Fire truck siren is used extensively because it is designed to attract attention and create a psychological response in the people around them.

Sirens have a variety of sounds, such as:

  • Air-Horn: There's a separate button on the truck's panel that controls air horns. Drivers can press it in short blasts, medium, or for an even longer duration. It has a deep low sound that motorists and pedestrians cannot easily ignore.

  • Howler: Police officers and fire truck drivers often use audible frequencies to attract attention. The howler can make them slow down by creating minor physical presences through low-frequency sirens. The howler's rumbling sound that the motorist feels and slightly hears is one way to attract their attention in a subtle and non-disruptive manner.

  • Yelp: A traditional city siren often used to notify residents and emergency personnel of urgent situations.

  • Priority: A siren sound commonly heard at intersections, and it often comes in the form of a high-pitched, rapid-firing sound. This noise is designed to alert people about fast-moving vehicles coming from intersections, making them perfect for emergency-responding fire trucks.

  • Wail: This siren sounds classic and iconic. It has been used in many movies, cartoons, and television shows. The siren sound has been around for centuries but is still used today in its original form.

  • 2-Tone: These have been used by the police and paramedics to alert people when they need help, but there's one siren that is unique to European police cars, and it is used today on ambulances too. This siren creates a high-pitched alternating loud tone often used by EMS today.

  • Manual: Has more emphasis on the duration of the highs and lows and has the same pattern as the wailing siren.

  • Blipper/Phaser/Piercer: Intense short, riveting sounds designed to catch driver and pedestrian attention.
