There are two types of suspended ceilings. The first are lightweight mechanical ceilings, these contain lighting fixtures and many times include outlets for air conditioning systems. The second type is an acoustical barrier ceiling. Constructed of gypsum board screwed together with staggered joints, these ceilings are still considered lightweight compared to concrete floors. Their sufficient mass allows them to act as a sound barrier, and because they are fully caulked and sealed they reduce noise transmission. This type is used in conjunction with the first type in many cases.
