The Benefits of Installing a Spring Hanger Ceiling

Commonly found in home theaters, restaurants, and bars under residential homes, suspended ceilings, also known as spring hangers ceiling, have become more popular in renovations and new build projects. There are many advantages to installing this type of ceiling including:

  • Support several layers of drywall and are able to withstand greater weight

  • Have a large capacity to absorb vibrations, which can combat both loud noises and low frequency sounds in both directions

There are two types of suspended ceilings. The first are lightweight mechanical ceilings, these contain lighting fixtures and many times include outlets for air conditioning systems. This type can absorb sound within a room, and because of the lightweight steel framing and absorptive tiles used there’s no reduction in the transmitted noise in or out of a room.

The second type is an acoustical barrier ceiling. Constructed of gypsum board screwed together with staggered joints, these ceilings are still considered lightweight compared to concrete floors. Their sufficient mass allows them to act as a sound barrier, and because they are fully caulked and sealed they reduce noise transmission. This type is used in conjunction with the first type in many cases.
