A horizontal boring mill is a machine that is used for boring big holes on workpieces that are not possible to rotate or move, are heavy and difficult to balance on other machines. It is one of the most powerful equipment that is used on heavy parts such as engines, cylinders, frames, and even on land.
Horizontal boring mills are capable of performing plenty of tasks such as milling, turning, cutting, grinding, and more. They come in four major types that you should use in order to choose the one that best suits your application.
1. Table type horizontal boring mill
The table type horizontal boring machine is the most commonly used available for general purposes where other tasks are needed to be performed, apart from boring. It contains a bed, headstock supporting column, saddle and table, boring bar, and end supporting column. The workpiece is placed on the table. This table can be adjusted as desired and the feed can be done manually or automatically. Depending on the table itself, the workpiece can be fed crosswise or lengthwise.
2. Floor type horizontal boring mill
Compared to other types of horizontal boring mills, the floor type has a constant floor-plate wherein the T-slots are providing support to the workpiece. Then both the headstock and end supporting columns are mounted on the runways that are installed at right angles to the spindle axis. Therefore, any adjustments made to the movement are provided by the spindle itself. This arrangement is specially designed to hold extra-large and heavy parts that are very hard to be adjusted and mounted on the table type.
3. Planer type horizontal boring mill
This type of boring mill looks like the table type but the difference is that in the planer type, the table slides on the saddle angle not directly on the bed as the case with the table type. Also, both of the end and headstock supporting columns can adjust either away or towards the table for accommodating varying widths of the workpieces. Thus, this type of boring mill is perfect for long workpieces.
4. Multiple heads type horizontal boring mill
As the name implies, this type of a boring machine contains several heads that look like housing planers. In addition, there are two vertical columns mounted at two sides of the bed that are bridged by a cross rail. The number of headstocks the machine can accommodate could be three or more.
