Oil Painting Classes: The Do’s and Don'ts

While many would associate oil painting to something very difficult, painting with oils, in reality, is not that different from using other kinds of paint. For sure, there are some differences but whether you know what not to do or not, you will find that attending oil painting classes is not just fun but it can open a whole new world of perspectives. So, here are some of the do’s and don’ts you have to remember when you are planning to enroll in an oil painting class.

DO #1. Know about the mediums

Since water and oil don’t mix, you will need solvents to dilute the oil paints. This is perhaps the most obvious difference between oil painting and acrylic painting. Be knowledgeable of the various solvent mediums and paint thinners available that you can use in diluting oil paints.

DO #2. Explore wet-on-wet techniques

What makes oil painting classes popular is because of the very nature of the oil paints. You can create dazzling visual effects on your art piece that is not possible with other paints like acrylics. This is why they are called the wet-on-wet technique in which the painter applies wet oil paint to an already wet surface. This gives the artists endless potential when it comes to creating a very interesting masterpiece.

DO #3. Use the knife

Of course, we mean the palette knife which every oil painter must experience using. It allows you to push the paint around in a fashion and effects that are not possible using a brush. You can even use a butter knife or a spatula to do it.

DON’T #1. Forget drying time

Depending on how much oil paint you use, oil paintings take longer to dry. This is why many artists love to use them. It gives them more time to experiment with the colour mixes and achieve the desired effects they want. Just never forget to allow the painting to dry properly by keeping them away from potential ruin while drying.

DON’T #2. Ignore the brush

This is perhaps the biggest reminder you should not forget. Whatever oil painting classes you attend; it is your brushes that will enable you to make all your beautiful creations. So, you have to take care of them by cleaning them regularly.

By following these tips, you will be sure to know that oil painting would equip you to create artworks that you never knew you were capable of achieving
