Knowing The Basics of Helical Gears

In one application or another, you are sure to find helical gears used in gearboxes. This is primarily because each element of these gears has been studied and tested in great detail by industry laboratories and standards across the globe. The gears’ excellent power capacity per mesh had made them the preferred option for many product or machine designers. Moreover, committees around the world are constantly gathering to continue improving the design of a helical gear as well as that of other gears like spur and bevel gears.

It is indeed very true that there are so many aspects about helical gears that have to be learned. Before the gear was perfected and was widely used today, there was a lot of debate as to what should be the proper design for this gear set and there was barely a consensus for it. Not all gear experts agree on the same element pertaining to this gear. In fact, there are several areas that people often disagree about.

Well, obviously, one of the most common disagreements is very simple and may even sound irrelevant. That is something to do with the word’s pronunciation. There are two major camps debating this case. The first camp believes that the term “helical” is correctly spoken as “hell-ick-al”. Conversely, the other camp disagrees saying that the right pronunciation is “heel-ick-el”. The latter camp says so because of the fact that the word helical is derived from its root word, helix, and so, “heel-ix”. But we all know it is simply absurd to use such a reason.

But of course, apart from its technical term differentiation, it is more relevant to identify the reason what makes helical gears different from other gears such as spur gears. Unfortunately, it is the same “helix” angle that differentiates the two major gears. If you want to know more about these gears, just reach out to us today for expert advice.
