Do you own an electric vehicle or EV? Then you most likely know the convenient feeling of not having to go to the gas station very often or not at all. New EV units can cover at least 100 kilometers in just a single charge. There are even some models that can go as far as 160 kilometers while hybrid EV can go a greater distance of more than 500 kilometers using both gasoline engine and EV charger technology. If it is your first time buying and driving an EV, the distance you can travel depends on many factors such as battery size, load weight, vehicle technology used, and even your driving style.
Just like gasoline-powered units, electric vehicles will not run out of charge unexpectedly since they also have a dashboard where the current level of battery charge is being displayed, allowing you to plan your trips accordingly. In terms of cost, the average cost of a typical EV charging is at about $0.78 on a single charge per day, equivalent to roughly $300 a year. So, using an EV charger is much cheaper than fueling up in gasoline stations. This is why EVs have become so popular in Canada and EV charging stations are installed in different locations across the country.
But are you aware that there’s a better time to charge your electric vehicle? Charging at night is cheaper due to substantially lower energy prices. EV charging during night time also is environmentally beneficial because you are using electricity from cleaner renewable energy sources such as hydro, wind, and nuclear. This is in contrary to charging at daytime when gas is used to meet peak demand. But compared to a car burning diesel or gasoline, driving an EV, regardless of what time you use an EV charger, produces far fewer greenhouse gas emissions and lower air pollution. Just don’t forget to hire a licensed installer to avoid legal and safety issues.
