How To Properly Maintain Your Woodworking Band Saw Blades

Your band saw blades can be really hardworking. But keep in mind that they also need to be maintained so that they will give you the service you need. So speaking of which, here are the three major points to consider when maintaining your woodworking band saw blades.

Routine Maintenance

With scheduled routine maintenance, your band saw blade will perform better. It will last much longer if the entire equipment is being serviced regularly. This is because not only will the blades be checked but all other important parts such as the tensioners, bearings, guides, etc. to ensure that the blade aligns and has correct tension. Moreover, you can also help keep the saw by doing daily cleaning and light oiling to remove buildup of dust and grime. This small regular maintenance will help keep your machine in top shape.

Running-in or Bedding-in Procedure

This is crucial when fitting in new woodworking band saw blades to prevent problems like premature wear and broken teeth. The process is also called bedding-in wherein you will be running the saw at about half speed and at a reduced rate while feeding force to reduce the initial stresses that might be experienced by the blade. The reduced running seed is intended to take any extra-sharp edges off the new blade. Finally, by bedding the blade into the material slowly, it helps assure the blade to have a longer service lifespan.

Using Coolant

Using a coolant is very important to ensure proper operation of the saw. It serves two major functions: remove heat from the blade and lubricate the cutting area. Just remember that there are various coolants available. So, make sure that you are using the right coolant designed for your woodworking band saw blades. While you can also mix some water in the coolant, never use water alone to avoid issues.

By performing these three simple but effective maintenance tips, you can add years to your band saw machine and optimize your blade performance.
