How The Teeth of Bevel Gears Are Aligned.



Compared to other types of gears, bevel gears are specially designed to transfer energy between intersecting axes. The most common alignment for the teeth of this gear is perpendicular. However, they are also made for almost any angle, making it feasible to change the operating angle. Their teeth bearing surface also called surface pitch, is conically tapered or shaped. By altering the number of teeth or diameter on each wheel, the mechanical advantage of the gear can also be modified. The ratio of teeth between the drive and driven wheels can either be decreased or increased.



As such, the rotational drive and torque of the succeeding wheel can also be altered in relation to the first one. When its speed increases, the torque decreases and vice versa. The teeth alignment of bevel gears can also be done in four different configurations. The first one is straight which makes the gear look the same as spur but have their teeth narrowing towards the apex. With this alignment, the gear’s operation can be loud due to the abrupt contact between meshing teeth.



The second alignment is spiral in which the teeth of bevel gears appear like that of helical but with angled teeth in zero. The third type is called the hypoid bevel gear which looks very similar to a spiral gear but its mating gears do not have intersecting axes. This allows for a bigger pinion and smoother operation. The last alignment is the crown wherein the teeth typically look like points of a crown. They also have pitch angles of 90 degrees and parallel with their axis.
