Categorizing Structural Steel Based on Chemical Composition




Structural steel is a category of steel construction material that is created with a specific shape or cross section, each with particular values of chemical and strength composition. Its particular size, shape, strength, and other compositions are controlled to achieve the desired properties. It is often used in a number of industrial, civil, and marine engineering applications.



Depending on the quantities of additives of other elements added onto the original composition of structural steel, it can be categorized into various types that are usually found in buildings, bridges, and pipelines. Apart from iron, carbon is the most important element in steel. The increase in the amount of carbon in creating steel results in high strength and low ductility. High-strength tempered and quenched alloy steel

High-strength, low-alloy steel


This type of structural steel is the most recently developed variety wherein more chemical elements are used to further improve its strength. The most common type is ASTM grade A572.



Mild structural steel/Carbon-manganese steels


As the name implies, this category of steels is made using carbon, manganese, and some iron. They are particularly called mild structural steels but they offer high strength and ductility. Given the fact that they are economical, they are the most widely used type in the construction industry.
