Structural steel plays an integral role in today’s high-rise condominiums and skyscrapers because it can last for a long time and stay durable in any weather. Metal fabricating has made it possible to streamline the production of electronics, automotive, industrial power tools, and more. For product-oriented fabrication, four metal fabrication processes play a critical role in any project.
Cutting
Cutting is a process used by metal fabricators to remove excess material from a workpiece. Cutting may be done with a saw, a blade, a drill, a laser, or a plasma torch. There are three different types of
cutting: through-cut, edge-cut, and surface-cut. Let’s learn more about each one below:
Through-cut: When cutting a piece of wood, the saw's blade goes through the end of the piece.
Edge-cut: When cutting a piece of wood, the saw's blade goes along the edge of the piece.
Surface-cut: When cutting a piece of wood, the saw's blade goes across one surface of the piece.
Punching
Punching is a process in which holes are made in various shapes in metal sheets. The purpose is to increase the surface area of the metal sheets to make them stronger, thinner, or more flexible.
Shearing
Shearing is a metalworking technique for quickly cutting metal sheets, plates, or tubes by forcing one of the pieces against an anvil held at a sharp angle. This leaves a rough surface on the metal, which may be further worked after the cut.
Welding
Welding is a metal joining process, which involves melting the edges of two metal pieces together. It is also used to join metals to non-metals or to join dissimilar metals.
