3 Types of DNA Test Possible While Pregnant

A DNA test while pregnant is important because it determines if the baby is developing normally by analyzing its DNA. If the test shows that the fetus does not have any abnormalities, then the parents can feel reassured that everything is fine.

DNA tests during pregnancy are safe as long as professionals handle the entire process and the pregnant mother takes all the necessary precautions before having the test.

Here are three types of DNA tests available for parents.

Chorionic Villus Sampling

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal genetic screening test used to detect some birth defects or to determine a baby's sex. It is done between 10 and 14 weeks from the last menstrual period.

The test is done by taking a small sample of the chorionic villi, which are tiny finger-like projections on the developing placenta. CVS is usually performed by inserting a long, thin needle through the mother's abdominal wall and uterus into the placenta. The test takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Non-Invasive Prenatal Paternity Test

A non-invasive prenatal paternity test is a blood test that is done to determine the likelihood that the unborn baby is the biological child of the woman's partner. This type of test can be done as early as eight weeks into pregnancy. A paternity test, on the other hand, determines who the father of the child is. This type of test can be done after birth but does present some minor risks.

Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a procedure in which a sample of the amniotic fluid is taken from the amniotic sac surrounding the baby. The fluid is then tested for abnormalities, such as neural tube defects, chromosome problems, or fetal lung disorders. The test can also be used to determine a baby's sex.

Amniocentesis is safe because it poses no physical risks to the mother or the baby. The procedure only takes a few minutes, and the risk of infection is low. Amniocentesis also poses no risks to future pregnancies and can be done at any time during pregnancy.
