A threadlocker also called thread locking fluid or threadlocking adhesive is a low viscosity adhesive used to secure threaded assemblies such as bolts and nuts. They secure the fasteners after tightening to avoid loosening.
The right threadlocker is determined by considering the threadlocker strength, formulation, and fastener size. Let’s walk through these different factors and how they affect your threadlocker choice.
Strength
Threadlockers come in different grades—low, medium, and high. Low strength threadlocking fluids are used to secure bolts and screw temporarily. It means the fastener would be disassembled using hand tools routinely.
Medium strength threadlocking fluids are ideal for securing joints that may be disassembled rarely using power tools. High-strength threadlocking fluids are applied to fasteners to achieve a permanent bond. It means one has to employ a combination of power tools and high heat to disassemble the bolted joint.
Formulation
Technology has made it possible to create threadlocking adhesives that can keep up with the operating conditions of the end-use environment. Threadlocking fluids now have formulations that can survive extreme temperatures, chemicals, and extreme vibration.
Fastener Size
Aside from the threadlocker strength, one has to consider the fastener size. Low strength adhesives are applied to screws with diameters less than 0.25 inches such as calibration screws and require constant adjustment. Medium-strength adhesives are ideal for fasteners like mounting bolts with diameters more than 0.25 inches. High strength adhesives secure bolts permanently with more than one inch in diameter such as used in different types of heavy equipment.
Invertech Canada offers the SAT brand that matches any competitive threadlocker product brand. We have three categories for the varying strengths of threadlocking adhesives: purple (low strength), blue (medium strength and red (high strength)
We can also customize our SAT thread lockers to suit your specific requirements.
