3 Commonly-Used AC Motors in Various Machines

AC motors are the most common type of electric motors and are designed to operate on alternating currents. AC motors use a rotating magnetic field to create a rotating electromagnetic field, which in turn creates the rotating force.

The significant advantage of an AC motor is that it can be started and stopped without a clutch, which can be an advantage for machines that cycle frequently. AC motors are important for many of today’s machines because they offer a high power-to-weight ratio, high efficiency, and high torque.

There are three types of AC motors commonly used in many modern machines.

Right-Angle Geared Motor

This is an AC motor where the gearbox is at a 90 degree offset from the shaft. The gearbox is usually geared to the shaft to decrease the speed and increase the torque of the motor. Right angle geared motors are used in low-power and small size applications, such as cordless drills and vacuum cleaners.

Inline Geared Motor

An inline geared AC motor has its input connected to a power source, typically a wall socket or some other external power source. The output of the gearbox is connected to an external load, typically some sort of electrical appliance. A shaft exists that connects the input and output. The shaft is connected to gears that are fixed on the interior of the gearbox. This shaft moves when the input moves.

Parallel Shaft Geared Motor

A parallel shaft geared motor has two parallel shafts with gears turning on each. The parallel shafts are part of the same housing. One shaft is powered by the motor, and the other shaft is not. The gear attached to the motor shaft is called the drive gear. The gear attached to the non-powered shaft is called the idler gear. As one gear turns, it turns the other gear via a fixed connection.
